What are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are hard, rock like deposits that form in the kidneys, two organs that filter waste and extra fluid from the body. Kidney Stones develops when there is too much waster and not enough fluid in the Kidneys

Calcium Stones and Non-Calcium Stones

  • Uric Acid Stones- Urine contains too much Acid
  • Cystine Stones- Urine contains too much of the amino acid Cystine
  • Struvite Stones- they form from the waste products of bacteria associated with infections and are composed of Magnesium Ammonia Phosphate

What are some of the Causes?

  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obesity
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Not getting enough calcium
  • Diet high in salt or sugar

  • Excessive Caffeine- can stress out the kidneys
  • Rhubarb- high in oxalates
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Meat-high protein diet- waste is difficult to eliminate from the body efficiently, meat is also high in uric acid
  • Sardines- purine content
  • Salt-encourages water retention
  • Carbonated drinks- sugary drinks
  • Some leafy greens- spinach, okra and swiss chard
  • Dairy foods- increases the excretion of calcium in the urine
  • Processed foods
  • High-oxalate foods- try to limit your intake of grits-bran cereals-sweet potatoes-beets. Just to name a few
  • Animal protein-large amounts of protein also reduces a chemical called citrate. Citrate’s job is to prevent the formation of kidney stones
  • Vitamin C- great health benefits but too much increase the amount of oxalate
  • Foods that make urine more alkaline

 Best ways to prevent kidney stones

  • Stay Hydrated
  • Lemon water first thing in the morning
  • Avoid high sodium intake
  • Watch your meat intake
  • Soda is not your friend
  • Exercise
