Key 1 – A Call to Repentance

According to Matthew 4:17, Jesus began preaching, saying “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Key points:

  • Verse: Matthew 4:17
  • Message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”

Explanation: This verse marks the start of Jesus’ public ministry, where he calls people to turn away from their sins and acknowledge the coming of God’s kingdom.

Repentance is an essential part of salvation because it is the process by which a person turns away from sin and turns toward God in faith. It demonstrates a heart change, a recognition of sin, and a desire to align one’s life with God’s will. The Bible (KJV) emphasizes repentance as a prerequisite to receiving forgiveness and salvation. Below are the key reasons why repentance is essential, supported by scriptures:

1. Repentance is Commanded by God

Repentance is a direct command from God, required for salvation and reconciliation with Him.

  • Acts 17:30:
“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:”

2. Repentance Prepares the Heart for Forgiveness

True repentance involves confessing and forsaking sin, making it possible for God to forgive and cleanse the heart.

  • 1 John 1:9:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
  • Proverbs 28:13:
“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

3. Repentance is Essential for Entering the Kingdom of God

Repentance is a prerequisite for experiencing God’s kingdom and salvation.

  • Matthew 4:17:
“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

4. Repentance Brings Spiritual Renewal

Repentance involves turning away from sin and turning toward God, leading to spiritual transformation and renewal.

  • Acts 3:19:
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10:
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”

5. Repentance Leads to Forgiveness of Sins

Without repentance, sins remain unforgiven. Acknowledging sin and turning away from it opens the door for God’s grace.

  • Luke 24:47:
“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
  • Mark 1:15:
“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

6. Repentance is a Key Theme in the Gospel Message

John the Baptist, Jesus, and the apostles all emphasized repentance as central to their message.

  • Matthew 3:1-2:
“In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
  • Acts 2:38:
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

7. Repentance Demonstrates True Faith

Repentance and faith go hand in hand; repentance shows a genuine belief in God’s power to save and transform.

  • Hebrews 6:1:
“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,”

8. Repentance Prevents Judgment

God’s patience provides an opportunity for repentance, but failure to repent leads to judgment.

  • Luke 13:3:
“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
  • 2 Peter 3:9:
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

9. Repentance Reflects a Change of Heart

Repentance involves a genuine change of heart and mind, turning away from sin and aligning with God’s will.

  • Ezekiel 18:30-31:
“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”

Summary

Repentance is essential for salvation because it is the means by which believers acknowledge their sin, turn away from it, and turn to God in faith. It opens the way for forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and alignment with God’s will. Without repentance, there is no remission of sins, no transformation, and no entry into the kingdom of God.
